Hello!
I’m delighted to join the team at Hull Hub as one of their regular columnists! Each issue I’ll be sharing with you my top tips and trends for great hair, letting you know what me and my team have been up to and hopefully answering any questions you may have about your hair.
For those of you who don’t know anything about me, my name is Mark Hill, twice British and International Hairdresser of the Year. I started my career in a salon in Hessle and have now owned my own salon for nearly 30 years! I’m lucky to be backed by a great team – Jules (Creative Director and winner of North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year), Jarrad (Artist Director), Lizzie and Penny (Senior Stylists), Georgina and Hailey (Top Stylists), and Tash (Creative Stylist). Each of them has their own specialties; from Wedding hair to precision cutting, colouring through to adding hair to boost volume or length. I’d love to introduce to them all through this column over the next few months.
Over the years, my career has taken me to places I never would have thought possible – styling hair for the Oscars, TV, films and celebrities. But I’m still passionate about working in my salon on the outskirts of Hull 3 days a week – I love listening to what my clients want from their hair and enjoy the way I can positively change the way they feel about themselves.
One thing I’ve learnt from my clients over the year is no one is ever 100% happy with their natural hair – if you’ve got curly hair you want it straighter, if you’ve got fine hair you want it thicker, the list goes on…!
My advice? Don’t fight your natural hair, embrace it!
I’m not saying leave your hair and do nothing, just learn to enhance what you have. For instance, if you have curls but you hate how unruly they are, have you ever thought about using a styling tong or wand to define or make them softer? Or if your hair is naturally straight, don’t ditch your straighteners, use them to smooth those little flyaway strands from around the partings and hairline and add a great shine.
So why not rethink the way you style your hair – stop fighting against your hair and work with it!
