What did a rotten banana have to do with World Book Day?

In a bid to get children thinking outside the box for World Book Day, this year, Hull’s School Library Service chose The Day the Banana Went Bad as its focus, inviting schools to get involved with a whole host of themed lessons   

The picture book, by Michelle Robinson and Tom Knight, is a fantastically funny book about celebrating differences and individuality. 

When Banana is thrown into the ‘reject’ bin with the other mis-shapen fruit and veg, he decides that enough is enough – after all, he may be a little bit bruised but that doesn’t mean he’s any less brilliant! 

Amy Jeffrey, Learning and Engagement Development Officer, explained: “This year for World Book Day we wanted to do something a bit different – celebrating both reading and our individuality. 

“The Day the Banana Went Bad is a great book about being proud of your bumps! And celebrating what makes each of us different! Because going bad can sometimes be very, very good. 

“Using this book as our focus for World Book Day we provided lots of ideas for schools to have fun – not just in English lessons, but in science, geography, PHSE, art and maths too! It’s been great to see what each school has been getting up to. From issues such as identity to sustainability it tackles important issues in a fun and accessible way.” 

Schools were invited to attend a special event on Friday 13 March at Hull Central Library when children will get to meet the author Michelle Robinson and Tom Knight the book’s illustrator.
